Opera for Youth, Inc.
is an international non-profit organisation working in the field of
opera and music theatre for young musicians and audiences, dedicated
to encouraging the creation of operas to be performed by children and
adults in theatre and opera companies, in schools and community organisations;
to the support of composers and librettists and to the study and publication
of writings about opera and music theatre for young performers and young
audiences
Opera for Youth, Inc. works with individuals and organisations representing theatre, opera, dance, broadcasting, arts, education and publishing. In the USA these have included National Opera Association, the National Federation of Music Clubs and District of Columbia Music Clubs, the Children's Theatre Association of America, the New York City Opera Guild, Voice of America and other organisations in Washington. Opera for Youth, Inc. has published its Opera for Youth Journal for the past 23 years and has published 12 annotated bibliographies, the most recent being the first edition of its 1978-1998 Annotated Bibliography of Opera/Music Theatre Works for Young and Family Audiences. The second edition (1978-2001) is currently in preparation. Opera for Youth, Inc. has conducted annual workshops and conferences as well as regional meetings throughout the USA at which excerpts from more than 150 operas, and 36 operas in their entirety have been presented. It exchanges information with many affiliate organisations, including OPERA America, National Federation of Music Clubs, National Opera Association, American Alliance for Theatre and Education, ASSITEJ (International Children's Theatre), American Music Center, and Meet the Composer. It is also an Auxiliary Associate of the Music Educators National Conference. Opera for Youth, Inc. goes wherever it is asked to go, responds to requests for information from members and non-members alike, and continues to strive to convince the uninformed and non-believing of the enduring value of opera for young performers and young audiences in schools and communities throughout the world. In January 1998, Opera for Youth, Inc. celebrated its twentieth anniversary at the Kennedy Center, hosted by the Education Department of the Kennedy Center and the Washington Opera.
